My experience eating Gluten Free in Malta 2023

From the 11th to the 18th of July myself and himself went on a holiday together to Malta.

We stayed in Valletta. Valletta is located on the beautiful Malta Island, and is the Malta capital. The island is found amongst the aqua waters of the Mediterranean Sea just south of Italy, and North of the Coast of Africa. The whole city was like one big strip with stalls and restaurants everywhere. In fact, there is so many choices, so it’s extremely hard to go wrong when dining out in Valletta.

The Rooftop Bar & Lounge

Address: The Embassy Valletta Hotel, 173 Strait St, Valletta

Our first day in Valletta we thought we would go all out and go to this very popular roof top bar. We where sat next to the hotels rooftop pool. The views where absolutely amazing.

We both went with the Six Course Degustation Menu. We thought it would be a good experience, Which I did find strange seeing as himself does have a fish phobia. 😂 there was even raw fish on this menu.

They catered each dish I had chosen Gluten Free for me. They even had a basket of Gluten Free Bread come to the table.

Although a lot of this course were not to our taste, aka – the raw fish, raw beef and the caviar, some people would love it.

Point de Vue

Address: Point de Vue Guest House and Restaurants
Saqqajja Square, Mdina

This was the day we went to see Mdina. Mdina is another touristic place not to be missed if you’re interested in old but exhilarating cities. Mdina is one of the most unique places to visit in Malta and is the perfect option for a day trip from Valletta. The history of Mdina can be dated back to the Bronze Age. Some scenes from Game of thrones where even recorded here.

We took a nice horse ride through Mdina. This day reached 41C so we couldnt cope with the heat so we cut our trip short and run to a close by restaurant for a spot of lunch and a cold drink.

Soul Food

Address: 76 Merchants St, Valletta, Malta

Found near the Grandmaster’s Palace is the vegan restaurant in Valletta called Soul Food. Here you’ll find vegan and vegetarian friendly options to enjoy. Not everything is gluten free though so ask the staff. This was probably the most disappointing place of them all. There was gluten free pasta here so maybe I just chose the wrong thing.

D’Office Bistro

Address: No 132, Arch Bishop Street C/W 1 & 2 Fredrick Street, Il-Belt Valletta, Malta

This place was just a short walk away from us. The service was great. There was a nice calm atmosphere. I asked how they could cater for gluten free and was told the best option would have to be the gluten free pasta. I went for a spaghetti Bolognaise. It was divine and honestly one of my favourite meals of the whole trip. I just wish I could have ate more as the hangover was another level. 😂

Ħelu Manna Gluten Free Kafeterija

Address: 51 St. John’s Street, Valletta, Malta

This Place, how do I even put it into words? A 100% Gluten Free Cafeteria. Yep you read that right! I stumbled across this place while googling places close by that can do for gluten free. Of course we had to head straight there for brunch. We both got the waffles but there is so much. It was like heaven. My only regret was not getting loads pf pastries to go. I do not know why I did not think of it at the time.

Merkanti Rooftop Resturant

Address: 66 Merchants St, Valletta, Malta

We had no idea this stunning place was near us. We where out hunting looking at menus when a young girl approached us with menus and telling us of this place. As it was on a rooftop of a food court it must go missed often. We where happy we found the place as it was just lovely. there was also live music by a girl with a beautiful voice.

I can not remember what I had ordered but I know it was Pork Belly which had an amazing pistachio cream sauce which was to die for.

Taste

Address: 9 St. Lucy Street, Il-Belt Valletta, Malta

Taste is located in an idyllic setting in Valletta. You have probably seen a few viral videos of this area if you have been looking up Malta on TikTok, Instagram, etc. It is a very beautiful area. The food and cocktails where also delicious. Just don’t drink too much as there are a lot of steps.  😅

Anglo-Maltese

Address: 221 Merchant Street, Il-Belt Valletta, Malta

We went here for lunch. It was the best salad I had ever had. I usually find salads so boring but this was so tasty. It was so good we decided to go back the same evening for Dinner. The staff where so friendly, they where delighted to see we had returned.  I had the pizza for Dinner and it was defiantly homemade. So nice to go somewhere that does this. They assured me everything had been cleaned well before prepping and cooking.

Well that is it, that is everywhere I ate in Malta that I thought was worth a mention on this post.  It was an amazing Holiday and somewhere I feel is worth more than one visit. If you go and decide to bring the kids though I would suggest staying somewhere up north of Malta as there would be more for the kids there.

Malta has some water parks but manly up north, also not so many sandy beaches in the area we stayed. The beaches are okay but mostly all stone or rocky. You can travel to loads of other parts of Malta using the bus which is so cheap. Or get a taxi which is also affordable.

I feel the area we stayed is more suited to couples, friends or a mens/ladies trip away.

I hope you enjoyed and I cant wait to share another travel experience with you all soon.
