Gluten-Free Irish Jambons (Easy 3-Ingredient Recipe)

If you grew up in Ireland, chances are you’ve enjoyed a warm, flaky jambon at some stage, usually grabbed from a deli counter, hot from the oven, oozing cheese, and tucked inside buttery puff pastry. It’s one of the most popular pastries in the country. And now, thanks to ready-made gluten-free puff pastry, we coeliacs and gluten-free foodies don’t have to miss out!

Gluten Free Jambons

This Gluten-Free Irish Jambon recipe is a proper treat. Whether you’re using up leftover ham or just want something quick, cheesy, and comforting, these are always a hit. They’re ideal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner or even served with a side salad for an easy midweek meal.

Gluten Free Jambons

The magic of this recipe is in its simplicity. Just three ingredients are all you need: gluten-free puff pastry, ham, and cheese. I used Galberts Gluten Free Puff Pastry, which I picked up from the fridge section in Dunnes Stores. It bakes up golden and flaky, you’d never know it was gluten free.

For the cheese, I use a mix of grated red cheddar and mozzarella to get that perfect combination of melt and flavour. And for the ham, I just chop up a pack of good quality sliced ham into small squares. Simple ingredients, but when baked together in puff pastry? Absolute heaven.

Each pastry sheet can be cut into six squares, and don’t be shy when filling them especially with the cheese. The pastry puffs up beautifully in the oven, so you’ll want a rich, creamy centre that holds its own.

Once folded, give them a quick egg wash and pop them into the oven. The pastry will puff and separate slightly at the top, that’s exactly what you want! When they’re golden brown and bubbling, you’ve got yourself a gluten-free jambon that rivals any bakery version. And honestly, they might be even better.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Lay puff pastry out on a flat surface, cut pastry into 6 even squares.
  2. Place a good amount of cheese and a sprinkle of ham in the center of each square. Be generous. Then take in the corners of each square.
  3. Whisk your egg then brush egg wash over the top of each square.
  4. Bake at 400F/200C/Gas 6 for about 15 - 20 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.

Notes

Gluten-free puff pastry: I used Galberts gluten free puff pastry, which I found chilled in Dunnes Stores. If using a different brand, make sure it’s certified gluten free and handle it gently — gluten-free pastry can be delicate.

Cheese blend: I love using a mix of red cheddar and mozzarella — cheddar for flavour and mozzarella for that gooey melt. You can also use gouda or grated Emmental for a twist.

Ham: Leftover roast ham works beautifully, but sliced deli ham (chopped into small pieces) is just as good. Go for something thick-cut or flavourful for the best results.

Cutting the pastry: Each sheet of puff pastry should be cut into 6 squares. If it gets too warm and sticky, pop it back in the fridge for 10 minutes before cutting and folding.

Generous filling: Be generous with the cheese, the pastry will puff up as it bakes, so you want a nice cheesy centre that doesn’t get lost.

Egg wash: A simple egg wash (1 egg whisked with a splash of milk or water) helps give the pastries a beautiful golden colour.

Baking tip: If the tops separate or open slightly during baking, don’t worry — this is totally normal and part of the jambon’s signature look!

Serving: Best served warm. Reheat leftovers in the oven or air fryer for 5–8 minutes to get that fresh-out-of-the-oven texture again.
